fell on the city of chelyabinsk-- population over a million-- about a thousand miles due west of moscow on the edge of the ural mountains. the strike shocked and stunned the world. more than 1,000 people were injured. paul davies of independent television news begins our coverage. >> rorter: emerging from the russian sky, a giant ball of flame, a meteorite providing a spectacular show until it suddenly explodes 30 miles above the earth. the city of chelyabinsk was unlucky to be beneath the meteorites flight path and was showered with debris dropping from the sky. thousands of windows were smashed, shocked workers evacuated their offices. this school class is about to be interrupted by the shock wave. here the windows come crashing in, and a national judo squad runs for cover. canadian ice hockey star michael garnett plays for the chelyabinsk team and lives in the city. i was awakened by this loud bang, crash and shaking in my apartment that, you know, literally shook me out of bed. i kind of gathered myself and looked out the window and i saw this giant streak across the sky that was th

them those medals, it was announced today that the new york city teachers pension fund will divest all its money from gun manufacturers. the new york city teachers fund is pulling all of its investments, every cent from five companies that make firearms. that follows after california state teachers pension fund also took its money out of gun companies. and after the mayor of chicago said he is considering whether to get money from his city's pension funds out of the gun companies as well. it also follow cerberus, deciding to sell the giant gun company that they owned. a move cerberus made after a call from its client, a california public employees pension fund questioned their involvement in the firearms business. when investment firms and big pension funds start taking their money out of the industry of making guns, the politics here are taking a step up. this is not any more about the optics of grieving parents and frustrated law enforcement and what everybody believes is going to be the futility of trying to change anything. this is about taking the argument that something must be d

,000 people living south of the city. but on friday morning, they, like everyone in the region, were shocked by what they saw. an intense light followed by a trail of smoke across the sky. kindergarten worker says that the 22 children in this room ran to the windows when they saw the light. but she felt that something was wrong and moved them away. she said she was still facing the windows when the meteor's shock wave hit. as the windows blew in, the flying glass cut olga's hands and face, and she said she did not notice, because she was worried about the children. most were safe, but some were terrified and one was bleeding heavily. 3-year-old sasha suffered deep cuts to the hands and face. her mother ran to the kindergarten after she heard the blast. i was shaking she says, and i grabbed her and started to calm her down. a lot of the kids were crying, too. this lady was also in the room that morning and not hurt physically by the blast, but her mother says she is traumatized and too afraid to stand near the windows and keeps asking if the glass is going to break again. ekaterina says that
